Just like humans, there is no one “sign” or "magical age" that qualifies you as a "senior". The same is true for our
pets.  Over time, we learn to accept and adapt to the physical and mental changes we face as we age.
Our pets are no different.

The biggest difference between you and your pet is that you have the thumbs to
open that bottle of medication when that old knee injury acts up or use the phone
to call the doctor when your vision just is not what it used to be.  Our pets have
to rely on us to take notice of these changes and do something about them.

Thankfully, because of better medicine and better nutrition, our pets are living much
longer than ever before, but they too are faced with much the same physical and
mental ailments that their humans do.

With the advancement in human medicine, there too have been great advancements for our pets.  This is why our
veterinarians recommend twice annual physical examinations for pets in the senior and geriatric age ranges. (See
the age graph below).

In addition to bi-annual examinations we recommend annual testing including: blood work, urinalysis, and blood
pressure check.  By analyzing these tests, in conjunction with twice annual physical examination, you and your
veterinarian will be able to establish a complete look at your pets’ physical health status.

Being proactive prior to illness allows the veterinarian to become familiar with your pets “normal values” so if and
when illness is presented, your doctor will have a “normal baseline” to evaluate change. These tests in conjunction
to a complete physical examination can help detect problems that may go undetected until they become a source
of concern.  Early detection is the best defense!

Diseases such as anemia, arthritis, diabetes, and kidney &
liver dysfunction can have a severely negative impact on
your pet’s good health and can go on for many months
or years without any outwardly signs. Most of these
diseases are treatable or manageable long before
they cause irreversible damage, become painful or worse,
life threatening.

At Grantline Veterinary Hospital, Inc. we want the
opportunity to provide our senior patients with the very
best chance to have a healthy comfortable senior life.

By scheduling an appointment with our
veterinarians, you and our doctors will be able to evaluate
your pets’ current health status and design a plan to allow
your pet to enjoy the “golden years.”  Topics such as: diet,
weight, oral health, exercise, and many more will be
evaluated and discussed so that you may greatly increase
the comfort for your older pet for years to come.

Call us today to set a time to have your senior pet
evaluated. Together we can help ensure you pet
gets the most out of life...everyday!
